SKI RESORT FOR BEGINNERS IN FLATTACH

The ski area serviced by a platter lift is located a few hundred metres from the guest house. It is ideal for children to learn skiing or for the whole family to enjoy sledding.

There are few things more satisfying after a long day on the slopes than having a hot drink and relaxing the tired muscles in one of the nearby mountain huts (hütte). You can view opening times and prices here.

MOLLTAL-GLACIER, 8 KILOMETRES FROM THE GUEST HOUSE (FREE SKI BUS)

The Molltal Glacier Winter Sports Area is among the five highest resorts in Austria, therefore its slopes are always snowsure. Gletscher Express, the underground funicular, takes you to the middle station located at an altitude of 2,200 metres in only 8 minutes, then you can transfer to a 6-passanger gondola, which takes you to the modern Restaurant Eissee at 2,800 m. From there you can take the chair lift (Gletscher Jet) to the highest ski areas starting at 3,200 metres. These areas are open for skiing in summer as well. The longest ski slope is 7 kilometres long, and there is a 13-kilometre high altitude trail for ski runners.

MALLNITZ – ANKOGEL, 17 KILOMETRES FROM THE GUEST HOUSE (FREE SKI BUS)

Ankogel ski area is located next to Mallnitz, a very welcoming Alpine resort. Two gondola lifts transport passengers to its highest slope (2,630 m). Skiing along the wide, 7-km-long trails, you can master a 1,350 m difference in altitude in a single descent. At the base station of the ski resort, there are some platter lifts where beginners can learn and practise. Mallnitz offers much more than skiing even in winter: the town has an ice rink, a 5-km-long sledding slope, a nice pool etc.

LIENZ ZETTERSFELD-HOCHSTEIN, 39 KILOMETERS FROM THE GUEST HOUSE

The two ski resorts, Zettersfeld and Hochstein, are located in the mountains above Lienz. While sunny Zettersfeld is ideal for families, Hochstein provides a challenge for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders. Both offer a magnificent view of the surrounding Dolomites.

Zettersfeld sits between 1670 and 2278 metres above sea level, where snow is guaranteed. Its 27 kilometres of wide ski slopes are secure from avalanches. The runs can be accessed using a gondola lift, 3 chairlifts and 3 tow lifts. Although most of the slopes are blue and red, there are some deep powder snow areas and a mogul run for advanced skiers. You can ski through a forest trail right down to the valley.

BAD GASTEIN, 34 KILOMETRES FROM THE GUEST HOUSE

Thermal spas and mountains make Gastein Valley one of the most sought-after winter vacation destinations in Salzburg. There are several ski resorts around the villages of Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein, all of which are accessible with a single pass, called Ski Amadé:

Stubnerkogel (to the West from Bad Gastein) – 40 km ski slope
Graukogel (to the East from Bad Gastein) – 14 km ski slope
Schlossalm (next to Bad Hofgastein) – 49 km ski slope
Sportgastein (10 km from Bad Gastein) – 24 km ski slope

Grossarltal – Dorfgastein – 80 km ski slope

The 8-passanger gondola leaves from the edge of Bad Gastein and it carries you right up to the Stubnerkogel terminal at 2,250 meters above sea level. You can slide down on the other side to Angertal, which forms an interconnected ski area with Schlossalm, located above Bad Hofgastein.

HEILIGENBLUT, 44 KILOMETRES FROM THE GUEST HOUSE

The village of Heiligenblut is located in the vicinity of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain (3,798 m). The ski area, which lies at an altitude of 1,300–2,900 metres, is equipped with14 lifts. It offers a total of over 55 kilometres of ski pistes. The highest areas offer deep powder runs, as well as a breath-taking view of the many 3,000 m+ summits, including the Grossglockner. Heiligenblut is very snow secure, no wonder the ski season kicks off in late November and lasts until Easter.
